Eh…words will be the death of me..

So, last week I wrote a post. In the body of the post I mentioned a quote from my step-father with regard to white women. As an addedum to the quote I mentioned that I didn’t date white women anymore. It was possibly worded in a way for many that makes me read much like the reverse John Mayer. And like Mayer I received a stream of responses in the subliminal.

Alright. I’ve been here before, right?

Understand that the Asylum is no longer a blog with an audience of my coolest classmates. The Asylum is no longer a blog, in a lot of ways. And most importantly, it must be understood that the Asylum is the favored spot of one thousand or more visits a day. The Asylum entertains and informs people from all of the varied walks of life. Cool.

But…

The Asylum is still the writings and thoughts of a guy whose story has so many twists and turns I can’t always digitally transcribe them without causing the average human resource worker to cringe. I’m a very live character. An adventurer even. I tell my story here, because this is what I have to tell my story. And it is still MY STORY.

Granted, the Asylum is ours, now. I get that. And it is home to more than just one gender, and one race. I am totally aware of that. However…

I can’t appease everybody. I’m not condemning interracial relationships. I’m not demeaning white women. I’m just stating that I am in a place where sacrificing my lust and limiting my lust simply makes sense. I come from a people that have very few sensible cultural patterns. Most of our cultural patterns are based on slavery. And those are based on emotional acts, and expressions of physical extensions that entertain the elite. My people behave for money thrown at them. In a society that only respects those that have collective respect, I have chosen to sacrifice my life for the team. I understand that all this bullshit is bullshit. But my people need somebody to show them just how much of a game society is.

So I don’t date white women.

Does that make me the bad guy?

“What About Oscar????” Designed By J Farand

So, after the verdict in the trial of Johannes Mehserle for the death of Oscar Grant, it seems that many of us have forgotten what this was all about.

From the perspective of a black man, yes, Oscar Grant was killed. Objectively, Oscar, a young black male was shot by a police officer in the back while Oscar was handcuffed with his hands. Oscar Grant, whose iconic image is a photo manipulation of a picture that was taken while he is holding his child. So that would add father to the list of qualifying adjectives used to describe the slain man. Unfortunately, we are hearing and reading less and less about Oscar Grant, and who he was. Instead, many have decided to focus their attention on the “outrage” and the “looting” of a footlocker that became the focal point of the reports of reaction to the verdict.

Hopefully, my death would not be by murder. And even more so, not a murder at the hands of a police officer who claims he mistook the weight of a loaded nine millimeter pistol for that of a stun gun. However, in that event, I would hope for justice. Justice not only for my family and loved ones, but also for those that will never get to hear me laugh, see me smile, or read my sarcastic analysis. I would hope that in a country that demands an eye for an eye in every situation of foreign attack, that I could possible have such. Even as a humble and forgiving man, I believe that I am peaceful enough of a person to ask that society respect itself enough to eliminate the possibility of my killer walking around to commit the same sort of atrocity. In the case that retribution couldn’t be had, I would at least want people to remember me.

Justice for Oscar, should have emphasis on OSCAR. In the event of the above described malady, I would hope that when the question arose, “Who is Jay Farand?”, that the answer could be more than just another black man killed by law men. Sure, I would want the intellectual minds that have never met me to analyze and deduce the proper position they should hold. Sure, I would want those that rally the people to action to use certain propaganda tactics and sensationalism as they deem necessary. But, most of all, I’d like people to get to know me.

Get to know my aspirations that would never be realized.

Realize that I too was once a human.

A human that enjoyed my cognac smooth and cold, and often after a dish of tempura dragon rolls.

Maybe the reason it is so easy for us to forget the degree of caution a police officer should have is because we have forgotten how much we are similar. How about I bet Oscar liked watching some of the same movies and listened to some of the same music as anyone reading these words. How can we hold anyone responsible in a correct manner, if we have become so distant from one another. We have almost stopped caring. Stopped feeling.

And maybe that is why it is so easy for some of us to be objective and cold. And I understand the need for cold analysis. But I bet nobody had to use cold logic when Mehserle needed 3 million dollars for his bond. I understand that this internet, this connection of wires to networks of machines and more wires, that allows to connect to this virtual world of avatars called the web, or the interweb, can make us feel like we are really socializing and actually being connected. But how often can we just debate with words on the screen, and forget that there is another heart beating on the other end of that packet of data you just transferred?

I wouldn’t want to be relegated to someone’s critique of my slaying. I understand how difficult it can be at times to be empathetic. I understand in a climate where our humanness is boxed into a group of standards that it can be hard to remember to be humane. I know how much work it can take to see my worth without basing that on my economic class, where I went to school, who I went to school with, and what type of car I drive. I know it can be difficult to act in a humane manner, but maybe this is the time to try.

And I’m not only talking to you…I’m actually moreso talking to myself…

Oscar Grant and The Mehserle Verdict: Why There Was No Justice

As most of you may be aware of, the verdict of Johannes Mehserle who executed Oscar Grant during a routine questioning surrounding a fight on the BART train. The former officer, who was out on a 3 million dollar bond that was posted by an organization of police officers, was found guilty on charges of involuntary manslaughter. He will be facing sentencing, which can range from 2 years to four years, at a trail date tentatively scheduled for August 6th of this year. Due to the misconception held in the minds of many people, and the dire lack of knowledge surrounding this case, in my opinion, I felt it necessary to explain exactly what the punishment entails.

Firstly, a verdict is not sentencing. Some of the reaction I’ve read through the twitterverse and a few forums is that the guilty verdict was enough. Although the murderer has been found guilty, what we should also consider is the type of crime he has been convicted of, and the legalities concomitant with the sentencing. The crime of involuntary manslaughter basically says that although a person has been killed, the offending person, Mehserle, in this instance, acted without the intention to kill. Regardless of the legal language and loopholes involved in this case, a cursory look at the videotape will show that Oscar Grant had not acted in any way that should have caused the officer to use a taser, let alone a weapon. The defense in the trail used the excuse that Mehserle was reaching for his taser. Once again, I state that police officers are responsible for the lives, and deaths, of the people that pay them, and there should be no accidents. It has also been resolved that Mehserle acted out of anger in restraining Oscar, which culminated in Mehserle handcuffing and shooting Oscar while handcuffed in the back. All of this points to intent on the part of the officer. In the slight chance that the officer of the law might have mistaken a taser for a gun, the case should have been tried as voluntary manslaughter. I am not a criminal lawyer in California, but for what it is worth, I don’t think in a case like this Mehserle, or any officer, should have been tried for anything less than a Murder 2nd.

The need to explain the crime that Mehserle was convicted of is to make this next point. Due to stipulations regarding sentencing, and so that judges have a guideline, each crime has a prescribed maximum sentencing. In this instance, the maximum sentencing is only four years. Due to the overcrowding of prisons, many states have set stipulations on how much time a person can do on a sentence. Let me expound some. Just because a person is sentenced to do four years, does not mean they will have to do the whole four years in prison. That person, in this instance, Mehserle, is in the custody of the state, and can be held on parole for whatever amount of time he doesn’t do in prison. That being understood, California, and most states have a stipulation on nonviolent crimes that limits the time that nonviolent offenders spend incarcerated to 50% of their sentence. So, even if Mehserle is given the maximum punishment, he can only, within state guidelines, be held in prison for two years.

Now, given the best that this system’s justice can offer the people, Mehserle, either an incompetent liar, or just incompetent, can still be free and walking the streets in two years. He can also be released by a parole review board BEFORE the two years are met. The two years are simply a conditional release requirement, this is referred to as a CR date. That means that he can be released anytime after seeing the parole review board. His sentence is not the punishment, it is simply a parameter of his punishment.

My speculation is that even in the case of a maximum sentencing, the four years, Mehserle will be eligible to see the parole board within six months of today. Yes, today. Although he hasn’t been sentenced yet, his time begun the minute the jury stated he was guilty. That gives him a month until his sentencing, and five month thereafter. He most likely will go into protective custody, which means he will be separated from the other prisoners in the general population. We also know that he has an extremely loyal and faithful organization of officers that were willing to place 3 million dollars in the belief that he would not miss a single court date. I would seriously doubt that he will miss one day at the commissary. I’d wager all of my finances that he will have all of the creature comforts available to a prisoner in California’s correctional facilities and more.

In essence, I don’t believe that justice was served one bit today, and in my mind, from my personal experiences, Mehserle will walk away from this situation with no more than a pain from the slap on his wrist.

The thing is not beating yourself.

And society provides a myriad of means for us to destroy ourselves. We have yet to see a truly human and communal megapower on the earth. What we have is individuals who have been successful in manipulating other people. OR those who have come from such families. When we look towards a Paris Hilton, what we realize is she doesn’t have any major talents, nor does she spend much time developing any, but yet she has her own influence: The money of her father. Although Brandy’s little brother does have a singing voice, we realize he doesn’t have to work the chitlin circuit to be seen.

So you have to commit to a lifestyle that will allow you to benefit and produce from your greatness, or destroy for your greatness, as that can become our nessecity.

We’ve entered a time when most will need to return to the land. Or to the mind. Depending on one’s skillset, of course. We have become slaves again to a very weird degree. Although we are able to provide for our families, what we really are doing is nothing different than slavery. We are simply supporting a nationalism that was built by rich manipulators. And yet, social darwinism is the rule of the day. The average US citizen believes that it is alright to turn their noses at other humans who are not able to provide for themselves. The average human still believes in the right of might.And that may be a biological consideration that I have not the scholarship to discuss presently, but the obvious observations have been duly noted.

To me, the question is not about dialectics or a superficial review of Hegel or Marx; for me it is simply asking a person if they have ever been in a position to eat every food type with their fingers. Now we are discussing something radical, or as the definition suggest, of the root. If one cannot return to the root of the problem, usually, that student is the one that will fail. If a person is unable to return to the root behaviors of society, and begin from there to understand the contradictions presenting themselves and extending themselves, then that student will fail at being a human.

What today’s student fails to understand is the root of human behavior. It is easy to be social without having to face someone’s face. It is easy to be human with the utensils provided, and a socialization schemata being provided; but can you be a human without being told to be? Do you understand humanity without a map?

During the mid-century of the 1700s, the British colonist in what would become the USA, some who left Britain, and some who had been born in the thirteen colonies decided that the propaganda of the rich was reasonable enough to fight for. What most don’t understand is that that particular piece of propaganda that white male land and slave owners, most of which were high Masons, was the Declaration of Independence. What many love to refer to as a Revolution, was more of a successful secession of the US thirteen colonies from Britain. Those who had lost their home land such as the Native Americans, did not overturn the rule of the British invaders. The kidnapped and enslaved peoples from Nigeria, Ghana, Congo, Mozambique, Madagascar, Liberia and various areas of West and Central Africa would only see a more dehumanizing from of slavery. The women of the United States would still be considered as property of their men. The declaration of separation stemmed from the land owners, for all intents and purposes, the wealthy of the colonies at that time, feeling that they were being unfairly taxed. The original propaganda pushed by the likes of the Boston politician James Otis and Thomas Jefferson during his legendary guerilla imposition against the British Tea Act, now known as the Boston Tea Party. It would be the rapist slave owner Jefferson who would have the greatest contribution of purposeful influence through his literary ability in the penning of the “Declaration of Independence”.

Upon accepting the revised draft at the Second Continental Congress, the date of 4 July 1776, would become a date in which the land owners forced down the throats of the now embattled American Colonist, many of which were poor white males who where under contracts of servitude with the very writers of such lofty words as “All men are created equal”. Black men such as Crispus Attucks, a runaway slave, would die for no more than a chance to have his name mentioned once in the shortest month of the year. Yet, the celebration of this signing and accepting of rich men separating from other rich men in order to fleece the poor themselves continues to this day. As many go out and reenact the horrible conditions of war with fireworks and gun fire, please reflect on the purpose of this day. Not one woman signed the Declaration of Independence; it would have been laughable for women to have entered those chambers for any purpose other labor or even possibly sexual activity. Not one black person signed the Declaration of Independence, once again, a laughable proposition in light of the caste-like form of society at that time. The celebration of the Fourth of July is a celebration of Rich White Land Owners and their ability to persuade with fanciful words of liberty and brotherhood of man.

It is very telling that the same sociopath that wrote the words, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness,” would later write only some 9 years later, “I advance it therefore as a suspicion only, that the blacks, whether originally a distinct race, or made distinct by time and circumstances, are inferior to the whites in endowments both of body and mind.” This is a prime indictment against Blacks that would further the specious and purely ignorant discussion of the inferiority of the black race, and would be one of the ideas that allowed the US Constitution to be further tainted with the referring of Blacks as 3/5’s of a person in the second amendment. This is the man that penned the works that many of us are celebrating today.

I don’t have a problem with firecrackers; I enjoy firing them off myself. Yet, I do take issue with the reenactment of wars in the name of propaganda and nationalism, when the nation in discussion has always been just another form of protection and privilege for the elite. I will buy my firecrackers after the celebration of rape, torture, murder, hostage taking, land robbing, bombing of innocent children, and the like. I will discuss with the young that when they shoot the bottle rockets at one another, like I did growing up, what they are doing is reenacting the wars fought by the poor and oppressed for rich oppressors. I remind the brothers in the Nation of Islam, that although a white Arab passed on a great teaching to a poor Black man on the fourth of July, the Nation within a Nation has yet to be separated, thus independence as a political and social term has yet to be won. And if one Black is oppressed all blacks are oppressed.

Celebration is good; carnival is relaxing and allows our spirits to enjoy the nature of ourselves when unconstrained. War is vicious and ugly. The US is vicious and ugly. I leave you with those thoughts.

Lethal Weapon Faux Pas

I understand the culture that has built a certain wall around the term “nigga”. So, when I read that Mel Gibson threatens his former lover, Oksana Grigorieva, with the word “nigger”– as in “You look like a fucking pig in heat, and if you get raped by a pack of niggers, it will be your fault”– I am offended.

Regardless of what occurs inside the black community, if you are not black then your degree of disdain for blacks and stereotypical approach to dealing with people is questionable. There is a huge difference between a black person saying “nigga” and Mel Gibson saying,”nigger”. Huge difference.

I understand the discussion regarding American Blacks and certain unacceptable behavior patterns. When I hear Dead Prez say “nigga”, I understand what they are discussing. When Mel Gibson says,”nigger”, within a particular context, I understand what is being stated. Not that Mel Gibson is far from an intoxicated rant, but because the state of affairs between American Blacks and white americans is so strained. I can forgive Mel for his drunken disposition, but I can only alert my people to the fact that his statements are a reflection of the image that has been historically pressed into this society’s psyche regarding Black males.

Incidentally, 52% of all rapes in the US are perpetuated by white men.

We all have our faults, and we all should be corrected when at fault.

I don’t want to take up too much time with this discussion. I saw the timeline on twitter blazing with the hashtag 750million, and I saw the reports of Tiger Woods and his estranged wife Elin Nordegren.

According to one article that I read on People, the negotiations are “about $700 million”. According to the report here on Welsh, the couple has agreed on a settlement, and for $750 million dollars in Elin’s bank account, she will not discuss the marriage and Tiger will not be allowed to bring his women friends around the children.

Alright.

Tiger’s business is Tiger’s business, and for the record, I could really care less.

“Well, Mister Jay ‘Owl’ Farand, why did you take time out of your day to write this blog post about it?”

Well, since you asked…

My sister’s father once told me that I needed to start dating white women because I was smart, handsome, and charming…but broke. At the time, I was too intoxicated to respond rationally, and yet, even through the cloud of sensory impairment, I knew my days of chasing white women had been over. I do believe in love, and I do believe a person should love the personality more than the wrapping of that said personality. Yet, my Black Nationalist leanings have a tendency to inform even the most subtle aspects of my romantic nature. The contradiction is admitted and accepted, but, I am dedicated to my people in a very dangerous way. Most times foolish, even to me.

What I see is not just a man divorcing his wife. What I see is not just another man being financially raped by the divorce courts. What I see is more than Tiger Woods’ estate being passed to Ms. Nordegren. What I see is another fortune created by a black man being passed into the hands of a white woman. Nature may not know a color line, but society and politics do. And regardless of what many might claim about the color of money, economics in this world definitely understands racial segmentation.

Granted, Tiger Woods really hasn’t been the most nationalistic person with regards to the black community. For the most part, Black people claim Tiger Woods, Tiger Woods doesn’t claim Black People. However, race is one of those superficial items that create communal acceptance just because. Thus, just because Woods’ father was an American Black, Woods’ wealth is in the hands of a black person. At least a sizable portion.

Ultimately, this discussion will become a blanket statement disparaging interracial relations. I can’t control that. This is not a post indicting interracial relationships. As with most of my works, it is simply an observation. And as usual, there is a certain mathematical equation socially in operation that I would like to detail. Namely, as long as white women are the trophy–the status symbol–black men of means will see fit to be romantically involved with them. This is not to say that all black men involved with white woman are doing so because of the status attached to white women in this society. That is not even to say Tiger Woods did it. Yet, the implication is that wealth held by black men is often enough going into the hands of white women. The objective pattern is surely that Black men with money marry white women at a rate that absolutely establishes white women and helps to disenfranchise black women.

The media attack on black women is substantial enough to at least look at the political pronouncements that will attach themselves. Black woman are the most attacked group of peoples on earth. The destruction of the Black peoples will definitely need to see a complete and accurate destruction of the image of Black women. As long as men of any race see white women as the ideal mate and black women as the antithesis, we can most assuredly consider the future of black people comparable to that of the natives of the Americas.

I am not saying don’t date white women. I’m saying that the culture of black men with extremely large amounts of money (read that as symbols of people’s resources) married to white women at the rate it is represented in actuality will indeed create a pattern of behavior that can and will keep black women and thus black children away from necessary human resources.

I’m upset about your President of US accepting McChrystal’s resignation. I have my own reasons, mainly, I felt that McChrystal did nothing that most war scarred humans do when stressed, they poke fun at those that have never been through what they have. Further, McChrystal was a decorated soldier, well received by his soldiers, and regarded as the type of officer who would get down in the dirt with his soldiers. I am just as anti-war as the next bleeding heart liberal, but if we are going to talk war, let’s talk war. But eh…

Anyway, I see a lot of people with differing opinions, and that is acceptable. I don’t expect my opinion on the situation to be the holy grail, no matter how informed I may believe it is. One of the major reasons I don’t do intellectual cliques is because it can limit your ability to critically assess situations, and even simply apply your own spin. I see many people, that I will not waste your time screen capping, responding to today’s events as though a Black person shouldn’t be concerned. Why not?

How does my socially constructed “blackness” have anything to do with my response to the global affects of a provocative Rolling Stones article? What kind of “blackness” should I allow to limit my expressions of what I deem important? When are black people going to grow up?

If you can’t be questioned, you and I will probably not be in discussions long. I don’t need to hear a lot of slick talk. Trust me, I probably wrote a few books on slick talking and don’t even know it. I don’t need to hear a lot of aggressive talk. I am not impressed by it. Let’s discuss the issues, fact check one another, and build together. Building together doesn’t mean you seek to look right. It means presenting relevant information, perspectives, and keeping everything focused on developing truths that can become practical principles of behavior. I don’t need a clique of people to agree with everything I say. I know what books I’ve read, I want to get ideas from others with information I don’t have. If you ask me where I got a certain perspective from, I will tell you. But I don’t have to force my opinion on you, and hope you respect me enough to do the same.

Interesting discussion arose at lunch today. The lab ratvolunteer known in this series as the sustainable agriculturist asked the Kenyan neurology student a line of questions. I knew she wanted to ask an awkward question, because she started with, “Well, you aren’t really African, right?” He looked at her with the blank expression that black people give white people when white people are entering embarrassing territory. He responded, “Um, Yes, I am Afrikan.”

She says,”Oh, well, um, do Afrikans eatmushrooms?”

I couldn’t control the laughter. Everyone else at the table took turns mocking her question. She began to turn red from embarrassment. The funniest thing is that she kept trying to explain herself, which only caused her to dig further into that ditch. The Kenyan scientist simply stated,”Yes, we do. And you are only causing further awkardness.”

We have been using that dialogue all day and night.

Now, what I learned from that is people don’t know. You have to always allow for a certain ignorance, especially if the person is truly seeking to know. I have to respect her desire to know. It is definitely better that she went through this experience with us, than for her to write an article or even worse a book with such uninformed notions. I don’t know what they eat in Kenya, either. And ultimately, it was a lesson for all of us. You don’t have to be “politically correct” and tread lightly with every statement you make, but it helps to realize that you are in the position of student seeking to be taught. When I seek knowledge from those I don’t know, I come with a certain reverence. I mean, come on…I don’t know. Her mistake was making assumptions. Assumptions that unfortunately come from what seems to be her jingoistic US worldview. When I brought up her nationalistic prejudice, she conceded.

We are not going to learn all of our lessons in an academic fashion. Most of what I have learned hasn’t been blessed with the only consequence being a letter grade. Due to the reality of a dynamic existence, we have to consider the reactions, and potential reactions of everything we do. Not always an easy task. Eight people spending this much time together in closed quarters, sharing a virus, sharing our space, sharing ourselves is far from an academic environment. We are teaching and building a dialectic that will extend beyond the moment we are graded. In fact, the very theories we discuss are mainly from analysis of praxis, or experienced activities. I don’t fault her for her attempt to weave her way into what may have seemed an offensive topic, but unfortunately, it created a situation for her that prompts punishment. Luckily for her, it is just the wit of my tongue.

My vital statistics are excellent. Blood pressure has decreased and has leveled out well. Dropped five pounds, which is a testament to my metabolism because I’ve been acting the foodie lately. I’ve completed another obligation towards the book I’m inked as a co-author on, and that feels great to get out of my way. Been working on the logo for Owl’s Asylum, and planing on another design. Not sure when that will be completed, but it is in the works.

Missed breakfast this morning, woke up to my vital test and a needle. The nurse tells me that this will be the last day that I have to get stuck twice. Great. My inner elbow looks like an indented bruise. I don’t even think the nurse has to put pressure on the needle, it just slides in the vein. My blood pressure has gone down considerably, if nobody ever told you the ghetto can kill you, let me show you my charts.

Everybody is considering the fact that this will be over soon. As stated previously in this series, I never expected to actually like anybody. I never expected to really mesh with any one. Fortunately, I make a better statesman than prophecy maker. I may never be able to explain just exactly the degree this will change my life, but I feel it deeply. We talk a lot about poverty and white privilege, and in many ways, my thoughts on that haven’t altered completely, but I realize that there is another level of surviving poverty that many Blacks haven’t embraced. Namely, stop chasing the financial carrot. Of course, that might be too much to ask. A guy can dream.

I realize how movements begin. I realize how communities form. How the alienated can form bonds, and build a space for themselves. I notice the power of being an educated black man. I feel the power of being an intelligent black man. I also see the doom we face through myopic definitions that we have borrowed from the people we claim to have so much disdain for.

As I look out one of the only windows of the floor, my view glances across the highway and into the towers. It drifts slightly higher into the night sky. I always wonder how situations like this seem to end with such great lessons.

Try not to judge so harshly those who are surviving the world we subscribe too. Try to not put the standards you have been sold and branded with so high on the list of priorities. Try to to remember those that struggle with this world in deed, and not just in speech. Thank you.
